“Baby Esther”.

thesoftghetto:

We’ve all heard of Betty Boop. But how many of you knew that she was based off of a BLACK woman.

Yes Betty Boop was based off of Ms.Esther Jones known by her stage name “Baby Esther”. She was an African-American singer and entertainer of the 1920’s. Her singing trademark was “Boop oop da doop” hence the name Betty Boop! She performed regularly at the cotton club in Harlem,New York.

This IS NOT Baby Esther. This photo is of  Olya, taken in 2008 by a Russian-based studio, Retro Atelier.  As for the claims that Betty Boop are based on Baby Esther, those are tenuous, at best.  Helen Kane may have seen her act at some point and Betty Boop is widely thought to be based on Kane, though that claim was thrown out of court. (I have no doubt Boop was based on Kane, myself. Find more info on Baby Esther(Esther Jones) and the whole thing here.)

Come Dancing ~ The Kinks c.1983

The day they knocked down the palais
My sister stood and cried.
The day they knocked down the palais
Part of my childhood died, just died.

Now I’m grown up and playing in a band,
And there’s a car park where the palais used to stand.
My sister’s married and she lives on an estate.
Her daughters go out, now it’s her turn to wait.
She knows they get away with things she never could,
But if I asked her I wonder if she would,

Come dancing,
Come on sister, have yourself a ball.
Don’t be afraid to come dancing,
It’s only natural.
